Colonel Zeev Raz is best known for commanding the attack on the Iraqi nuclear reactor in 1981. However, not everyone knows that he is also the one who chose Ilan Ramon, then a young inexperienced Lieutenant to help him plan the mission. Today, almost thirty years later, he is acting to commemorate Ramon's name.
Since Ramon's tragic death in 2003, Raz has chosen to be an active partner in the "Touch the Horizon" project founded in Ramon's name. This project is operated by Pitchon Lev to assist youth in distress.
Cooperating with the newspaper "Israel Today" the Pitchon Lev non-profit organization is staging the show "Me and You in the Park" – a huge tribute to the Israeli singer Arik Einstein on his 70th birthday.
Raz tells how he became active in a project dedicated to assisting youth at risk from the beginning of their high school education through their army service and until their integration into civilian life. "It all started when I was requested to ask a question within the framework of the Bible quiz. I told them about coming back to Israel after our mission in Iraq. We flew our planes opposite the sun, and in essence the sun didn't set because we were traveling in the opposite direction of time. We looked into the sun which stood in the sky without setting and were reminded of the biblical verse: The sun stands still in Givon and the moon in the Ayalon Valley. Following that, members of the Pitchon Lev organization approached me and asked me to take an active part in the educational center." Raz said that he happily agreed.
Since then, Raz has become an integral part of the Pitchon Lev family. "I have tried everything to raise money to the benefit of these teenagers," says Raz and adds "We are talking about underprivileged youth who do not have an equal chance to advance themselves. This is indeed a sacred cause.Today, the education system is not equalitarian as it once was," adds Raz, "Children who have more resources at their disposal receive a better education and have a better chance to succeed. Pitchon Lev is trying to give everyone an equal chance."
The show "Me and You in the Park" will take place on Thursday, July 2nd, at Yarkon Park, Tel-Aviv.
